The Real Fábrica do Gelo, also referred to as the Snow Factory of the Montejunto Mountain Range, is situated in the Montejunto mountain range, within the parish of Lamas and Cercal in the municipality of Cadaval. This location is in the West region and district of Lisbon, Portugal. This unique site is one of the few of its kind in Europe and was considered technologically advanced for its time.
The Real Fábrica do Gelo, unique in Portugal, was built by Dominican friars before 1741. This ice factory played a significant role in supplying ice to the city of Lisbon. The construction of this factory was a considerable expense at the time, costing between 40 and 45 thousand cruzados.
The Real Fábrica do Gelo was classified as a National Monument in 1997. It underwent conservation and revaluation work and was reopened to the public on March 27, 2011. This recognition and restoration work highlights the historical and cultural significance of the factory.
