Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario and its collection

Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario
Source

The Railway Museum of Eastern Ontario, which was established in 1985, is housed in a former station of the Canadian Northern Railway. This museum is dedicated to preserving the history of the railway, including the station itself and a collection of historic rolling stock, equipment, and railway memorabilia.

Preservation Efforts at the Museum

The museum's main focus is on preserving the 1913 Canadian Northern (CNoR) station and a collection of historic rolling stock, equipment, and railway memorabilia. This includes items from the Canadian Northern Railway's operation, which struggled to build a third transcontinental railway from Québec City to Vancouver but ultimately met with financial ruin.

The Cataraqui Trail

The former railway line from Smiths Falls to Strathcona, near Napanee, which spans 104 kilometres (65 miles), has been transformed into the Cataraqui Trail. This multi-use recreational trail is now managed by the Cataraqui Region Conservation Authority and offers a unique way to explore the region's history and natural beauty.
