The Presidio Modelo, located in the suburban quarter of Chacón, Nueva Gerona, is a former 'model prison' with a unique panopticon design. It was built on what was then known as the Isle of Pines, now renamed the Isle of Youth, in Cuba. This architectural design allowed for constant surveillance of the prisoners, a feature that is still evident in the structure today.
Today, the Presidio Modelo serves as a museum and has been declared a national monument, making it a significant site of historical interest. The old administration building has been repurposed and now functions as a school and research center. Visitors can explore the prison-turned-museum and gain insights into its rich history.
