The Port Museum of Douarnenez, which was inaugurated in May 1993, is situated at Port-Rhu. This location is near the island of Tristan and on the former ria of Pouldavid, which serves as a natural boundary between Douarnenez and the district of Tréboul. This strategic location offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the maritime history and evolution of the region.
The Port Museum of Douarnenez is a hub of maritime history and evolution. It is dedicated to showcasing the skills of sailors and carpenters, and the daily life and work of women and men in relation to the sea. Visitors can gain a deep understanding of the maritime culture and the people who have shaped it over the centuries.
The Port Museum of Douarnenez boasts a collection of more than 280 boats, some of which are stored in its reserves. Visitors have the unique opportunity to explore some of these boats from pontoons and the jetty. This provides a hands-on experience of the maritime history and culture of the region.
The Port Museum of Douarnenez offers a range of free activities during the summer and each school holiday. From mid-July to mid-August, activities are offered every day. These include a visit on the history of Douarnenez and sardine fishing, meetings with former sailors to discover the mending of nets and the tanning of sails, and tastings of local products.
