The Pont Napoléon is a significant historical landmark located near Luz-Saint-Sauveur in the Hautes-Pyrénées. This bridge, which spans the Gave de Gavarnie Valley, was constructed under the orders of French Emperor Napoleon III. The construction took place between 1859 and 1863, marking an important period in French history.

Architectural Features of Pont Napoléon

The Pont Napoléon is an impressive structure, measuring 69 meters in length and standing 65 meters above the Gave. The support arch of the bridge has a diameter of 42 meters, and the vault of the bridge rests directly on the rocky peaks of the Gave banks. This architectural design contributes to the unique aesthetic and structural integrity of the bridge.

Memorial Column at Pont Napoléon

In memory of Emperor Napoleon III, a 12-meter column topped with an eagle was erected at the eastern end of the Pont Napoléon. This column, which is made of Lourdes stone, is formed of 14 rings. This monument serves as a reminder of the Emperor's contribution to the construction of the bridge and the development of the region.
