The Peat and Settlement Museum is composed of several original, reconstructed buildings. These include a historical village school, a forge, and a settler's house that reflects the time around 1900. The reconstruction of this settler's house in 1988 marked the founding of the museum. These buildings provide a tangible connection to the past, allowing visitors to step back in time and experience the living conditions of the early settlers.
The Peat and Settlement Museum is open to visitors from April to October and offers a range of interactive activities. Visitors can participate in bread baking in the bakehouse, experience a traditional wedding in the wedding room, or enjoy a cup of East Frisian tea. These activities provide a hands-on experience of the traditions and customs of the early settlers, making the visit to the museum a truly immersive experience.
The Peat and Settlement Museum also features different large peat extraction machines and peat ships that can be visited on the site. The museum is constantly expanding its collection of demonstrable historical techniques, devices, and machines. This provides visitors with a unique opportunity to learn about the historical methods of peat extraction and the technological advancements that have taken place over the years.
