The Paramaribo Zoo, the only zoo in Suriname, was opened in May 1972. It is conveniently located adjacent to the Cultuurtuin in Rainville, Paramaribo. This location makes it an accessible destination for tourists visiting the city.
The Paramaribo Zoo is home to a diverse range of animals, with about 75% of them being local wild animals that were either confiscated or former pets. With the exception of the tigers, all the animals are native to Suriname, providing a unique opportunity for visitors to see and learn about the country's local wildlife.
In March 2020, the Paramaribo Zoo began a reconstruction program to mimic the native conditions for the animals, enhancing their well-being and providing a more authentic experience for visitors. Additionally, in April 2020, a water park for children was constructed in the park, adding another fun and engaging activity for families visiting the zoo.
