The Megaterio Paleontological Museum, located in the province of Santa Elena, is recognized as the first paleontological museum in Ecuador. It offers a modern and relevant museum experience that combines both scientific and educational elements. The museum showcases remains of Late Pleistocene Megafauna, which dates back to between 50,000 and 8,000 years ago. These remains were discovered in the Tanque Loma sector of the La Libertad Canton, which is one of the largest and most significant fossil deposits in South America.
The Megaterio Paleontological Museum houses paleontological pieces that date back 26,000 years. These pieces were found in the Tanque Loma sector of the La Libertad Canton. The museum exhibits fossil remains of various large mammals such as the American mastodon, megatherium (giant ground sloth), American horse, and giant armadillo.
