The Palazzo Santacroce Altieri is a noble residence situated in Oriolo Romano, a town in the province of Viterbo. The construction of the palace took place between the years 1579 and 1585, initiated by the Santacroce family. Later, the Altieri family expanded the palace in 1674 during the papacy of Clement X, a prominent member of the Altieri family.
The Palazzo Santacroce Altieri features an attached park, enclosed by walls, which the owners could access through a private entrance. The palace's sober facade is home to numerous frescoes, including seven images of Rome, stories from the Old Testament, and landscapes that depict places that belonged to the family during that era.
The Palazzo Santacroce Altieri also accommodates the Gallery of the Popes, a collection that comprises portraits of all the popes of the Catholic Church. This gallery served as a model for the portraits of the popes of San Paolo outside the walls, which were unfortunately destroyed in the fire of 1823.
