Oxford Castle is a significant historical site, located on the western outskirts of Oxford. This medieval Norman castle was constructed by Robert d'Oilly, a Norman administrator, in 1071. This was just five years after the Norman conquest of England in 1066, marking it as a key location in England's history.
From the 14th century, the castle fell into ruins and the site became the seat of the district government and courts. The county prison gradually took over most of the site and was managed by Her Majesty's Prison Administration from 1888. The prison was closed in 1996 and the site was returned to the administrative division of Oxfordshire. Today, it has been redeveloped into a historical and commercial complex, offering guided tours of the historic buildings and courtyards that are used for markets and theatrical performances.
The redeveloped site of Oxford Castle not only offers a glimpse into the past, but also includes modern amenities such as apartments, bars, restaurants, and event venues. One of the highlights of the site is the award-winning tourist attraction 'Oxford Castle-Unlocked', which provides an immersive experience of the castle's history.

Oxford Castle Unlocked offers visitors a journey through 1,000 years of history in the heart of Oxford. The site combines elements of a castle and a prison, providing an educational experience that spans from the Norman conquest to more recent times. Guided tours, led by costumed character guides, are generally praised for being informative and engaging, bringing the castle's rich history to life. Visitors appreciate the opportunity to climb St George's Tower for panoramic views of Oxford, explore the 900-year-old crypt, and descend into the atmospheric 18th-century debtors' tower and prison wing. The museum effectively balances historical facts with interactive elements, making it suitable for both adults and children. Some visitors note that the tour can feel rushed at times, and a few mention that the ticket prices are on the higher side. However, most agree that the experience is worthwhile, especially for those interested in British history or the evolution of the penal system. The gift shop and on-site café receive mixed reviews, with some finding them adequate and others suggesting room for improvement. Overall, Oxford Castle Unlocked is considered a solid addition to Oxford's cultural attractions, offering a different perspective on the city's history compared to its famous universities.
