Oljeön and its collection

Oljeön
Source

Engelsbergs oljefabrik, located on Barrön Island, often referred to as Oljeön or the Oil Island, is one of the oldest preserved refineries in the world. Situated in Lake Åmänningen near the town of Ängelsberg, this historical site offers a unique glimpse into the early days of the petroleum industry.

The History of the Refinery

The original refinery was constructed in the 1860s by Pehr August Ålund, north of the Engelsberg forges. However, it was destroyed by a fire. In 1875, for safety reasons, the new refinery was built on an island off Ängelsberg. This historical event adds to the unique narrative of the site.

Engelsbergs oljefabrik as a Tourist Site

Today, the Engelsbergs oljefabrik is a tourist site and forms part of the Bergslagen Ecomuseum. Visitors can explore the historical refinery and learn about its significant role in the early petroleum industry.
