The Central Bank of Uruguay has the exclusive responsibility of issuing banknotes, minting coins, and withdrawing circulation of banknotes and coins throughout the territory of the Republic. This is in accordance with the provisions of numeral 10 of Article 85 of the Republic's Constitution.
In 2017, Uruguay made history by becoming the first country in the world to use digital bills. This was done in collaboration with the National Telecommunications Administration, IBM, and Redpagos, among others. This move towards digital currency is a testament to the country's progressive approach to financial systems.
