The Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum, a visual arts museum in Northern Norway, holds a significant role in the region's cultural landscape. Established in 1985, the museum moved to its current location in Tromsø in 2001. The building, originally designed by architect Søren Andreas Wiese-Opsahl in 1917, has a rich history, having served as a post and telegraph office and later as a police station.
Throughout the year, the Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum hosts various temporary exhibitions showcasing both contemporary and historical art. In addition to these, the museum boasts a permanent collection of over 2,250 works. However, due to the vastness of the collection, only a small, representative portion is on display at any given time.
The Nordnorsk Kunstmuseum has been recognized for its contributions to the art world. In 2017, it was named 'Museum of the Year' by the Norwegian museum association. The museum's performance, Sámi Dáiddamusea, created in collaboration with RiddoDuouttarMuseat, has also received several awards, including the Art Critics Award in 2018, Tromsø municipality's culture award in 2017, and the Norwegian Audience Development award for Next Internship in 2017.
