The Niles Canyon Railway (NCRy) is a museum railway that offers a unique journey through history. It operates on the route of the first US transcontinental railway, covering a distance of 14 kilometers. The journey starts from Sunol, California, passes through the scenic Niles Canyon, and ends in Fremont, California, located on the eastern bay of San Francisco. This railway line has been meticulously rebuilt to provide an authentic experience of the past.

Historical Significance and Year-Round Excursions

The Niles Canyon Railway (NCRy) holds a significant place in history, being listed in the National Register of Historic Places as the Niles Canyon Transcontinental Railroad Historic District. The railway is managed by the Pacific Locomotive Association, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to the restoration and preservation of historic vehicles. To provide a comprehensive historical experience, the NCRy offers year-round excursions with both steam and diesel locomotives.

Preserving a Piece of American History

The Niles Canyon Railway has a rich history that spans over a century. Steam locomotives were the primary mode of transport for 80 years before diesel locomotives took over in the 1950s. However, after 120 years of railway operations in the canyon, the Southern Pacific discontinued the line in 1984. The tracks were removed and the land was transferred to Alameda County. In 1987, the Pacific Locomotive Association, Inc. reached an agreement with Alameda County and began the process of rebuilding the railway line, preserving a significant piece of American history.

The Niles Canyon Railway offers a scenic and nostalgic train ride through the beautiful Niles Canyon in Sunol, California. Visitors generally appreciate the historic locomotives and vintage railcars that provide a glimpse into early 20th-century rail travel. The 1.5-hour round trip journey is often described as relaxing and picturesque, with opportunities to enjoy the natural beauty of the canyon.

Many reviewers highlight the knowledgeable volunteers who share interesting historical information and anecdotes about the railway and the area. The open-air car is frequently mentioned as a favorite, allowing passengers to take in the views and fresh air during the ride.

However, some visitors note that the experience might be a bit long for younger children or those expecting more varied activities. A few reviewers mention that the seats can be uncomfortable, especially for the duration of the trip. Additionally, some find the price a bit high for the experience offered.

The railway's special events, such as the Train of Lights during the holiday season, receive particularly positive feedback and are often recommended as a memorable experience.
