SF-88, located in the Marin Headlands north of San Francisco, California, is a former Nike Missile launch site at Fort Barry. This historical site offers a unique glimpse into the past, specifically the Cold War era. It was initially opened in 1954 with the purpose of protecting the population and military installations of the San Francisco Bay Area from potential Soviet bomber aircraft attacks.
Missile Types at SF-88
Originally, SF-88 was armed with Nike Ajax missiles. However, in 1958, modifications were made to the site to allow it to also be armed with Nike Hercules missiles. These changes reflect the evolving military technology and strategies during the Cold War era.
Visiting SF-88 Today
SF-88 was closed in 1974 but was not demolished. Today, it is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area and is open to visitors. The site can be visited on Saturdays from 12:30 to 3:30 PM, with formal tours taking place every 45 minutes. This offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore a significant piece of Cold War history.
