The town hall was designed in 1776 by John Carr of York. This Grade 1 listed building is still a working town hall, but also houses a museum, art gallery and temporary exhibition space in the Spotlight Gallery. Other rooms on view include the elegant 18th century Assembly Room, the Council Chamber and the Mayor's Parlour with 17th century civic plate.
