The Necropolis of Arteara, located on the island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, Spain, is an archaeological site of significant historical importance. It is the largest cemetery of the island's aborigines, providing a unique insight into the burial practices and customs of the early inhabitants of the island. The site is situated in the south of the island, on the right bank of the Fataga ravine next to the town of Arteara, in the municipality of San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
The Necropolis of Arteara is home to more than 800 tumular burials. These were constructed using the stones that cover the area, a consequence of a landslide from the adjacent mountain called Morro Garito. This unique construction method provides a fascinating glimpse into the burial practices of the island's early inhabitants, and the site's extensive size and number of burials make it a significant archaeological location.
In 2014, an interpretation center was opened at the Necropolis of Arteara, enhancing the visitor experience by providing additional information and context about the site and its historical significance. This development has made the Necropolis of Arteara one of the archaeological parks that Gran Canaria has, offering a unique opportunity for visitors to learn more about the island's history and culture.
