The Naturzentrum Thurauen, located in Flaach in the Zurich wine country of Switzerland, is an information and experience center that was established in 2011. It serves as a hub for visitors to learn about the local environment and the ongoing efforts to restore and preserve it.
One of the main focuses of the Naturzentrum Thurauen is the renaturation project of the Thurauen on the Thur. This project is of significant importance as over 90% of the original river floodplains in Switzerland have been destroyed due to river straightening, drainage, and conversion into agricultural and settlement areas.
The visitor center at the Naturzentrum Thurauen features an interactive exhibition that showcases the habitats of a river floodplain. Visitors can follow a symbolic river course that illustrates the development of the Thur from straightening to renaturation. An air bridge connects the visitor center with an adventure path that leads through the floodplain forest, providing a unique and immersive experience.
