The Natural History Museum of Funchal, located in the São Pedro Palace, is a significant part of Portuguese civil architecture from the late 17th century. As the oldest museum in the Madeira archipelago, it offers a unique insight into the region's history and natural heritage.

Diverse Exhibits at the Museum

The museum's exhibits include a wide variety of species, including 78 species of fish, 247 birds, 14 terrestrial and marine mammals, 3 marine reptiles, 152 insects and other invertebrates. Additionally, there are 19 species of plants and a representative collection of rocks and minerals from the archipelago, as well as marine fossils from Porto Santo.

Additional Features of the Museum

In addition to its exhibits, the museum also houses a Scientific Library, an Aromatic and Medicinal Plants Garden, and a Municipal Aquarium. These additional features provide a comprehensive experience for visitors interested in natural history and science.
