The Brockenhaus is a significant landmark located at the peak of the Brocken in the Harz region of Saxony-Anhalt. It serves a dual purpose as a visitor center for the Harz National Park and a museum. This makes it a key point of interest for tourists visiting the area, offering a wealth of information about the park and its surroundings.
The present-day Brockenhaus, a three-story building, was constructed starting from 1983. It was originally used as a listening station by the Ministry of State Security of the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The building is notable for its distinctive dome, which was installed for the listening technology. This feature led to the building being colloquially referred to as the "Brocken Mosque" or "Stasi Mosque".
On June 1, 1993, the museum was relocated to the Brockenhaus. The exhibition was subsequently expanded and now focuses on the history of the Brocken, the development of the national park, and the mysticism associated with the Brocken, including tales of devils and witches. This provides visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the region's history and folklore.
