Nationality Rooms and its collection

Nationality Rooms
Source

The Nationality Rooms are a unique collection of 31 classrooms located within the University of Pittsburgh's Cathedral of Learning. Each room is designed and donated by a different national or ethnic group that has contributed to the development of the city of Pittsburgh. These rooms serve not only as functional classrooms but also as a testament to the diverse cultural heritage of the city.

Functionality of the Nationality Rooms

While the Nationality Rooms are of museum quality, they are not just for show. 29 of the 31 rooms are used as daily classrooms by the University of Pittsburgh faculty and students. The remaining two rooms, the Early American and Syrian Lebanon, are display rooms that can be viewed through glass doors. This unique blend of functionality and cultural display sets the Nationality Rooms apart from typical museum exhibits.

Public Tours of the Nationality Rooms

The Nationality Rooms are open to the public for daily tours. Visitors can explore these unique rooms and learn about the diverse cultures that have shaped Pittsburgh. However, as these rooms are also used for university functions, it's important to note that access may be limited if a room is being used for a class or other university event.

Guided Tours of the Nationality Rooms

Since 1944, tours of the Nationality Rooms have been conducted by a student organization at the University of Pittsburgh called Quo Vadis. This organization guides over 40,000 tourists a year, providing them with an in-depth look at the unique cultural heritage represented in each room.
