The National Prison Museum, located in Fontainebleau, was a unique institution that was open to the public from 1995 to 2010. It was housed in the buildings of the former Fontainebleau prison, providing a unique insight into the history of prisons and the penal system in France.
The building that housed the National Prison Museum was constructed in 1845 and served as a prison from 1855. This historical building, designed by the architect of the General Council of Seine-et-Marne, is representative of the prisons erected during the Third Republic. It was designed with a panoptic plan, allowing the guard at the center of the device to see all the prisoners without being seen.
The collections of the National Prison Museum included a wealth of documents on penal and penitentiary history in France and abroad. These documents, often original and primarily in French and English, covered a period of three centuries of history, providing a comprehensive insight into the evolution of the penal system.
