In 1948, the site of the Nankin Mills Nature Center was donated to the Wayne County Road Commission by Ford. The commission remodeled the mill and in 1956, it was opened as a nature center. Later, in the mid-1980s, Nankin Mills became the headquarters of the Wayne County Park System. In 1999, an addition was built and in 2001, the original mill was reopened as an interpretive center. These developments have enhanced the center's offerings, making it a comprehensive destination for nature and history enthusiasts.
