The Museum Regiunal Surselva, also known as the Regional Museum of the Grisons Highlands, is an ethnographic museum located in Ilanz. Established in 1988, the museum is housed in the Casa Carniec, an old patrician house in the old town. The museum showcases exhibits from over 60 localities in the Surselva region, taking into account the ethnicities of both the Romansh and German-speaking populations, particularly the Walser people who settled in the Safiental and Obersaxen areas in Surselva.
The museum is housed in the Casa Carniec, an old patrician house in the old town. This house was the oldest residence of the noble family Schmid von Grüneck from Ilanz. The vaults in the basement and ground floor date back to the High Middle Ages. The former banquet hall is adorned with wall paintings from the mid-16th century. These paintings were done 'al secco' on dry plaster. The motifs are embedded in floral, vine, and oak tendrils. The original picture bands running around the room were partially destroyed by structural interventions. The paintings were restored between 1996 and 1998.
