The Museum of Literature on the Upper Rhine is located in the Prinz-Max-Palais, the city's cultural center. This historic building also serves as the headquarters of the Literary Society Karlsruhe. In addition to the museum, the Prinz-Max-Palais hosts the city museum and the youth library of the city library, making it a hub of cultural and educational activities.
The museum's permanent exhibition is divided into different epochs, providing a comprehensive overview of the region's literary history. One room is dedicated to the Middle Ages, Humanism, Baroque, Sturm und Drang, Heidelberg Romanticism, and the 19th century. Another room explores modernity and its counter-currents, exile and inner emigration, and the literature of the second half of the 20th century. This layout allows visitors to journey through time and experience the evolution of literature in the Upper Rhine region.
Since its redesign in 2008, the museum's permanent exhibition has been enhanced with multimedia elements, providing an engaging and interactive experience for visitors. The museum offers an audio guide in both German and French, ensuring that a wide range of visitors can fully enjoy the exhibits. There is also a separate audio guide specifically designed for children and teenagers, making the museum a great destination for families.
