In 1913, the brewery was purchased by millers Wehrli & Koller, who converted the main building into a large mill for the time, using electric group drive. This mill was one of the last examples of vertical group drive mechanics, a system where a single motor drove the entire facility through numerous belts and shafts. The mill operated until 1983, marking a significant period in the history of the building.
Today, the Mühle Tiefenbrunnen complex is a vibrant center with a diverse range of offerings. It houses the Museum Mühlerama, Miller’s Studio Theater, the Department of Dance of the Zurich University of the Arts, a fitness and dance studio, the Blaue Ente restaurant, conference rooms, the atelier of fashion designer Christa de Carouge, as well as offices, apartments and small shops. This diverse mix of uses makes the complex a lively and interesting place to visit.
The Museum Mühlerama, located in the former mill from 1913, is a unique attraction within the complex. The mill is operational during the museum's opening hours and produces several tons of semi-white and rye flour from wheat each year. The museum offers a permanent exhibition on the cultural history of grain, as well as special exhibitions that primarily deal with nutrition and food and drink culture. In addition, the museum offers various workshops and tours for both children and adults, including bread baking courses and tours of the historic mill and the special exhibitions.
