Museum Elisabeth Weeshuis is housed in one of the oldest buildings in Culemborg: the Elisabeth Orphanage constructed in 1560. It is the first newly built orphanage in the Netherlands. Until 1952 this historic building provided shelter to more than six hundred orphans and half-orphans. In the orphanage museum the visitor learns about the goings on in the orphanage and the lives of the children.

Museum Elisabeth Weeshuis in Culemborg offers visitors an engaging look into local history and the story of orphanages in the Netherlands. Housed in a well-preserved 16th-century building, the museum provides a mix of historical exhibits and interactive displays. Visitors often appreciate the detailed information about the daily lives of orphans and the evolution of childcare practices over the centuries. The museum's collection includes period furnishings, artifacts, and personal stories that bring the past to life. While some find certain areas of the museum could benefit from updated presentation methods, many praise the overall educational value and the building's atmospheric charm. The museum's compact size allows for a thorough visit in a relatively short time, making it a worthwhile stop for history enthusiasts and those interested in social welfare history. However, some visitors note that not all information is available in English, which may limit the experience for international tourists.
