The Stadtmuseum Villach, located in the former Palais Crusiz in Widmanngasse, Villach, was established in 1873. The museum's foundation was made possible by builder Carl Andreas Picco, who generously donated his collection to the institution.
The Stadtmuseum Villach has had a few locations over the years. In 1935, it was situated in a historic building on Kaiser-Joseph-Platz, which was unfortunately destroyed by bombs in 1945. However, the collections were safely evacuated in time. Since 1960, the museum has been at its present location in Widmanngasse.
The Stadtmuseum Villach is dedicated to the history of the Villach area. It showcases Neolithic settlement finds from Kanzianiberg, Bronze-Hallstatt period finds from Napoleonwiese via Warmbad-Villach, Roman period finds from the city area, and early medieval grave finds from Judendorf and Völkendorf.
