The Museu Etno-Arqueológico de Itajaí, located in Itajaí, is a museum that focuses on the prehistoric archaeology of the sambaqui and the rural ethnography of the lower Itajaí-Mirim River Valley, in the northern coast of Santa Catarina. This museum provides a unique opportunity for visitors to delve into the prehistoric and rural cultural aspects of the region.
Inaugurated on June 25, 2010, the Museu Etno-Arqueológico de Itajaí is maintained by the Genésio Miranda Lins Foundation. The museum is housed in the restored building of the old Engenheiro Vereza railway station, which was built in 1926 and declared a cultural heritage of Itajaí in 2002. This adds a historical dimension to the museum, making it a site of architectural interest as well.
The Museu Etno-Arqueológico de Itajaí offers an archaeological exhibition that showcases a collection from the Sambaqui Rua do Papagaio, located in the municipality of Bombinhas, on the northern coast of Santa Catarina. Additionally, the museum's ethnographic exhibition presents collections related to rural culture, folklore, and traditional artisanal production equipment used in the rural region of Itajaí. These exhibitions provide a comprehensive insight into the region's past and present cultural practices.
