The Museu Diocesano Dom José, also known as Museu Dom José, is a museum situated in the city of Sobral, in the state of Ceará, Brazil. This museum is a significant cultural institution in the region, attracting a diverse range of visitors.
The Museu Dom José boasts 36 rooms, each dedicated to a different theme. The exhibits range from sacred images and clothing to numismatic collections and old documents. Visitors can also explore rooms featuring toothpick holders, litters, instruments used in slave punishments, washbasins, chamber pots, soup tureens, cutlery, musical instruments, and fossils.
The Museu Dom José is housed in a mansion built in 1844 in the Luso-Brazilian style by Major João Pedro Bandeira de Melo. Before becoming a museum, it was purchased by Dom José and served as the Episcopal Residence. Today, it is considered a cultural heritage of Sobral and is one of the city's most popular tourist destinations.
