The Museo Paleontologico Scienza della Terra del Gamps in Scandicci, which opened in 2001, is home to a collection of minerals and a wide range of fossil specimens from the soils of Tuscany. These specimens provide a glimpse into the rich biodiversity that characterized this region during the Pliocene era.
Over the years, the museum's geopaleontological collection has grown thanks to new paleontological discoveries and donations from private collections. Today, the museum boasts thousands of exhibits, including some that are considered rare on a global scale.
The museum has been at the forefront of an international discovery - the finding of the Pliocene whale of Montalcino. This almost complete skeleton was recovered in collaboration with the Superintendence for Antiquities of Tuscany and is currently awaiting final restoration, which will be carried out by the researchers of the GAMPS under the supervision of the Superintendence.
