The art collection of the Diocesan Museum of Cortona was established in 1945 by Monsignor Giuseppe Franciolini, the then bishop of Cortona. The collection comprises objects and works of art from local churches and diocesan properties. It includes significant works by renowned artists such as Pietro Lorenzetti, Beato Angelico, Bartolomeo della Gatta, Sassetta, and Luca Signorelli. The museum also houses sacred furnishings of considerable value.
The exhibition at the Diocesan Museum of Cortona begins with a unique and high-quality ancient artifact: a Roman sarcophagus depicting the Battle between Dionysus and the Amazons. This artifact, dating back to the 2nd century AD, was discovered near the Duomo, adding a historical dimension to the museum's collection.
The room of goldsmiths and sacred furnishings in the Diocesan Museum of Cortona offers a glimpse into the prestige of the Cortonese seat. Notable pieces include the chalice of Michele di Tomè with translucent enamels from around 1370, and the Vagnucci Reliquary by Giusto da Firenze from 1457-58. The latter incorporates a French-made statuette of Christ from the early 15th century, commissioned by the bishop of Perugia, Jacopo Vagnucci, for the future city Duomo.
