Museo di San Pietro all’Orto

The Museo di arte sacra di Massa Marittima, located in the museum complex of San Pietro all Orto, is the primary art gallery in Massa Marittima GR. This museum shares its space with the Angiolino Martini contemporary art exhibition center. The museum was officially inaugurated on March 19, 2005, and it houses a vast collection of religious art.

Origins of the Museum's Collection

The collection of the Museo di arte sacra di Massa Marittima primarily originates from the cathedral of San Cerbone and other churches in Massa Marittima. This collection was made possible through an agreement between the Municipality, the Superintendence for artistic and historical goods of Grosseto and Siena, and the diocese of Massa Marittima Piombino.

Starting the Museum Visit

Visitors to the Museo di arte sacra di Massa Marittima begin their journey at the first entrance of the structure, located at Diaz course, civic number 36. Here, they will find a small room housing a ticket office and bookstore. From this room, visitors exit and enter a courtyard of the convent, marking the start of their museum exploration.

First Room of the Museum

The first room of the Museo di arte sacra di Massa Marittima is dedicated to stone fragments of sculptures that date back to the 12th and 13th centuries. These pieces, which include capitals, moldings, and shelves, mostly originate from the cathedral of San Cerbone.

Third Room of the Museum

The third room of the Museo di arte sacra di Massa Marittima is dedicated to 14th-century art. It features two notable works by the Lorenzetti brothers: a stained glass window from the sacristy of the Duomo depicting the Crucifix of Pietro Lorenzetti, and the grand Maestà of Ambrogio Lorenzetti. The latter is the most famous pictorial work in the museum, and perhaps in the entire city of Massa Marittima.

Large Room of the Museum

The large room of the Museo di arte sacra di Massa Marittima is dedicated to 15th-century painting and art, with some pieces from the 16th century. It contains masterpieces from renowned artists such as Sano di Pietro and Stefano di Giovanni, also known as Sassetta.
