The Museo delle navi romane, or Museum of Roman Ships, is an archaeological museum situated near the Rome-Fiumicino airport, within the territory of the municipality of Fiumicino. It is managed by the Archaeological Park of Ancient Ostia, a significant historical site in its own right. The museum's location offers a unique opportunity for visitors to explore the rich maritime history of ancient Rome, right where it happened.
Exhibits at the Museum
The Museo delle navi romane is home to five complete shipwrecks that were used for river-maritime transport in ancient times. These include three caudicarie ships (Fiumicino 1, 2 and 3), a small sailing ship (Fiumicino 4), and a navis vivaria (Fiumicino 5), also known as the fisherman's boat. In addition to these, the museum also displays two fragments of a ship's side. These exhibits provide a fascinating insight into the design and construction of ships during the Roman era.
Other Artifacts at the Museum
In addition to the shipwrecks, the Museo delle navi romane also houses a variety of other artifacts discovered in Ostia. These include a sarcophagus, a mooring bollard, a cast of the Torlonia relief, seals from the Antonine age, a sounding lead, an anchor stock, and amphorae. There is also a cast of an inscription found at the port and descriptive panels detailing the excavation phases for the recovery of the ships and the construction techniques of the hulls. These artifacts further enrich the museum's collection, offering visitors a broader understanding of life and technology in ancient Rome.
