The mummies of Guanajuato are a unique phenomenon resulting from the natural mummification of bodies that were buried in a cemetery in Guanajuato, Mexico, between the years 1850 and 1950. This process of natural mummification is believed to have occurred due to the dry and mineral-rich environment in which the bodies were buried.
The Museum of the Mummies
The mummified bodies were initially stored in a building and began to attract tourists in the 1900s. This led to the creation of the Museo de las Momias de Guanajuato in 1969, where the bodies have been displayed ever since. The museum has become one of the major tourist attractions in Mexico.
