The Museo Archeologico Provinciale dell Agro Nocerino, situated in Nocera Inferiore, was established in 1964. It was created to accommodate the Pisani collection, which consists of archaeological artifacts from the protohistoric tombs of San Marzano sul Sarno. Additionally, the museum also houses findings from the excavations conducted by the Provincial Museums Directorate. These excavations have been ongoing since 1957 in the necropolises of the Pareti locality in Nocera Superiore, not far from the Hellenistic-Roman theater of Nuceria Alfaterna.
One of the significant exhibits in the Museo Archeologico Provinciale dell Agro Nocerino is a Roman sarcophagus from the 3rd century. This artifact was reused during the Middle Ages and originates from the Bishopric of Nocera. The sarcophagus is made of white marble and features relief decorations on both its long sides. The front side displays two winged nikai, symbols of victory over death, supporting a clipeus, which was supposed to represent the image of the deceased.
Since 2019, the Museo Archeologico Provinciale dell Agro Nocerino has also been home to works from the Sala della Congiura. These works date back to the 6th-5th century BC and include a hydria, a type of water container, decorated with geometric and phytomorphic motifs. This addition enriches the museum's collection and provides a deeper insight into the historical and cultural context of the period.
