The Pierre-André-Benoit Museum-Library, located in Alès, is a museum dedicated to modern and contemporary art. It is housed in a neo-classical style building known as the Rochebelle castle. The museum has been recognized and labeled as a museum of France, indicating its cultural and historical significance.
In 1986, Pierre-André Benoit, a printer, sculptor, and poet, donated his collection of art to his hometown, Alès. His literary collections were donated to the National Library of France. These collections are organized around the illustrated book, which was the main activity of Pierre-André Benoit. This unique focus on illustrated books sets the museum apart from others.
The museum's contemporary art collection primarily focuses on the abstraction period from the 1950s to 1970s. However, it also includes works from great historical contemporaries such as Georges Braque, Picasso, Picabia, and Miró. This diverse collection provides a comprehensive overview of the evolution of contemporary art.
