The Musรฉe dโArt et dโHistoire dโAvranches is a municipal art and history museum located in the French city of Avranches in the Manche department (Normandy). It is one of the oldest museums in western France, founded in 1835 by the Sociรฉtรฉ dโArchรฉologie dโAvranches. The museum houses a wide range of collections, including folk art, local crafts, costumes, and furniture from the region.
The museum is housed in a part of the old bishop's residence. It was the seat of the bishops of Avranches in the 12th century before it was converted into a chancellery building around 1269. After the diocese was abolished during the French Revolution, it was used as a prison. This historical building adds to the charm and authenticity of the museum experience.
The museum displays paintings by regional artists, sacred art, costumes, furniture and folk art of the region, as well as craft rooms. The permanent exhibition is complemented by an archaeological collection and the reconstruction of a medieval monastery scriptorium. This diverse collection provides a comprehensive insight into the art, history, and culture of the region.
