The Montjuïc Castle was an old military fortress that was renovated in the 17th century and until 1960 served as a military prison. Allegedly, executions were regularly happening here during the civil war from 1936 to 1939. After that, it was turned into a military museum which closed in 2009. Now you can take a tour of the castle and explore permanent and temporary exhibitions devoted to the history of both the castle and the hill. One part of the exhibition is dedicated to the trials and executions that happened here while the castle served as a prison. The place also holds educational exhibitions and cultural events.

Montjuïc Castle, perched atop Montjuïc hill in Barcelona, offers visitors a mix of history and panoramic views of the city. The 17th-century fortress has served various purposes throughout its lifetime, from a military stronghold to a prison. Today, it functions as a municipal facility and museum.
Visitors appreciate the castle's well-preserved architecture and the opportunity to explore its grounds. The cannons and old military equipment on display provide insight into its past use. Many reviewers highlight the breathtaking views of Barcelona, the port, and the Mediterranean Sea from the castle's vantage point.
However, some visitors find the interior of the castle somewhat sparse in terms of historical artifacts and exhibitions. The museum aspect could benefit from more comprehensive information about the castle's history and its role in Barcelona's past. Some reviewers mention that the site could use better maintenance and updated facilities.
Access to the castle can be a bit challenging for some, as it involves an uphill walk or taking a cable car. While this adds to the experience for many, it might be difficult for those with mobility issues.
Overall, Montjuïc Castle is worth a visit for its historical significance and stunning views, but visitors should manage their expectations regarding the depth of the museum experience. It's a good addition to a day spent exploring the Montjuïc area, rather than a standalone destination.
