The main objective of the Museum of São Martinho de Dume is to display the Sarcophagus of S. Martinho de Dume and the Basilica of São Martinho de Dume. The museum also showcases other local archaeological finds. The sarcophagus, which is classified as a Cultural Property of National Interest, is a limestone coffin dating from the late 6th to 12th centuries, containing the mortal remains of S. Martinho de Dume.
The Basilica of São Martinho de Dume, located where the church of Dume stands today, is currently in ruins. It was built by the Suevi King Charrarico in 550 AD and was dedicated to S. Martinho de Tours. The basilica was once the cathedral of the now-defunct Diocese of Dume. The archaeological ruins of São Martinho de Dume have been classified as a National Monument since 1993.
