The METS Museo Etnografico Trentino San Michele, previously known as the Museo degli usi e costumi della gente trentina, is an ethnographic museum located in San Michele all'Adige, in the province of Trento. It is considered the most important museum in Italy and one of the most significant in Europe in terms of popular technology. The museum is housed in a former monastery of regular Augustinian canons, the last southern bastion of German monasticism.

Exhibition Route and Collections

The museum offers a rich exhibition route that runs through 43 rooms, winding from bottom to top in a helical sense and spread over 5 levels in 25 different sections. The museum houses a heritage of more than 13,000 objects, of which about half are exhibited. Among the exhibits are four large original hydraulic machines: the mill, the forge, the noria, and the Venetian sawmill.

Agro-Silvo-Pastoral System

The museum pays special attention to the agro-silvo-pastoral system of the Trentino mountain, a system that traditionally integrated cereal cultivation with careful management of forest resources and ovine-bovine breeding. The territory was divided into cultivation bands depending on the altitude. In the valley, there was the village with productive activities, vegetable gardens, and fields cultivated with cereals. At mid-slope, the land was divided between cultivated and meadow, the so-called 'maggengo'. Higher up was the forest from which to obtain firewood, timber for work, and secondary products. At the top, the space opened up to high-altitude pastures where animals were taken to the mountain pastures in the summer period.

Located in the picturesque town of San Michele all'Adige, this museum provides an informative journey through local history, customs, and craftsmanship.

The museum's exhibits are well-organized and cover various aspects of rural life in Trentino, including agriculture, winemaking, and traditional crafts. Visitors often appreciate the detailed displays of tools, clothing, and household items that offer insight into the daily lives of past generations. The museum also does a good job of contextualizing these artifacts within the broader social and economic history of the region.

One of the strengths of METS is its commitment to preserving and showcasing the area's intangible cultural heritage, such as local traditions, festivals, and folk customs. This approach helps visitors understand not just the material culture but also the social fabric of Trentino society.

While many find the museum's content engaging, some visitors note that additional English translations would enhance the experience for international tourists. The museum could also benefit from more interactive elements to appeal to younger audiences and families.
