Memphis Rock 'n Soul Museum
Source

The Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul Museum’s exhibition about the birth of rock and soul music is based on one created by the Smithsonian Institution in 2000. It tells the story of musical pioneers who, for the love of music, overcame racial and socio-economic barriers to create the music that shook the entire world. Located at 191 Beale, on the corner of legendary Highway 61 and inside of the FedExForum sports and entertainment complex, the museum offers a comprehensive Memphis music experience. It will take you from the rural field hollers and sharecroppers of the 1930s, through the explosion of Sun, Stax, and Hi Records, inside Memphis’ musical heyday in the 70s, to its global musical influence. The museum’s digital audio tour guide is packed with over 300 minutes of information, including over 100 songs. It takes visitors at their own pace through seven galleries featuring 3 audio visual programs, more than 30 instruments, 40 costumes, and other musical treasures. The museum and gift shop are open daily from 10:00 a.m. - 5 p.m., accepting our final guests at 4:15 pm. Admission is $15.00 for adults and $11.00 for youth ages 5-17. The museum also offers other special discounts for AARP members, AAA members, Smithsonian members, members of the military, and more. Be sure to ask about special discounts when you arrive.

The Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum offers visitors an informative journey through the musical history of Memphis. Located on Beale Street, it provides a comprehensive look at the city's influential role in shaping American music. The museum's exhibits cover various genres, including blues, rock 'n' roll, and soul, showcasing the evolution of these styles and their impact on popular culture.

Visitors appreciate the well-curated displays and the quality of the audio guide, which features over 300 minutes of music and commentary. The museum does a good job of highlighting both well-known artists and lesser-known contributors to Memphis' music scene. Many reviewers found the exhibits engaging and educational, offering insights into the social and cultural context of the music's development.

On the positive side, the museum's chronological approach helps visitors understand the progression of Memphis music over time. The inclusion of artifacts, photographs, and interactive elements enhances the overall experience. Many guests particularly enjoyed the listening stations where they could hear samples of different musical styles and artists.

However, some visitors felt that the museum could benefit from more interactive exhibits or live performances to bring the music to life. A few reviewers mentioned that the space is relatively small compared to other music museums, which might leave some visitors wanting more. Additionally, some guests found the admission price a bit high for the size of the museum.

Despite these minor drawbacks, the Memphis Rock 'n' Soul Museum generally receives positive reviews for its content and presentation. It serves as a solid introduction to Memphis' rich musical heritage and is often recommended as a starting point for music enthusiasts exploring the city's cultural offerings.
