The Memorial da Balaiada, located in the city of Caxias, is an educational-cultural center that was inaugurated on June 26, 2004. It is composed of a Museum and a Documentation Center and is situated 365 km from São Luís.
In 2018, the Mirante da Balaiada was inaugurated. This new tourist spot is located on Morro do Alecrim, near the museum, and also includes an ecological park.
The museum is housed in the old Police Barracks, which once accommodated the troops of Portuguese José da Cunha Fidiê and the Duke of Caxias. It features a permanent historical exhibition that covers the life of the balaios, their leaders, and the city of Caxias during the time of the conflict. Visitors can also explore the ruins on site. The museum underwent a restoration in 2014.
The museum's collection comprises 350 pieces, including archaeological artifacts, remains of armaments, lead bullets, projectiles, buttons and buckles of the military and the men and women who participated in the revolt. It also includes instruments of slave punishment, furniture pieces, silverware, canvases, a woodcut panel by the artist Tita do Rêgo Silva, and clay sculptures of the main leaders of the Balaiada.
