Marmaris Castle, situated in the Marmaris district of Muğla, holds a significant place in history. It was reconstructed by the Ottoman Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent during his campaign to Rhodes. This historical monument offers a glimpse into the strategic importance of the region during the Ottoman era.
Marmaris Castle is not just a historical monument but also one of the few castles in Turkey that houses a museum. The castle underwent restoration between 1980 and 1990 and was subsequently opened as a museum by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of the Republic of Turkey in 1991. Visitors can explore the rich history of the region through the exhibits displayed in the museum.
The museum within Marmaris Castle comprises a total of 18 rooms, a fountain, and an arch. It features seven enclosed spaces, including two archaeology halls and one ethnography hall. The archaeology section of the museum displays various amphora works from the Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine periods, offering visitors a chance to delve into the ancient history of the region.
