The museum was established on August 8, 1937, and has since been a place of memory for the islanders who created it. Initially, it had an ethnographic and regional vocation.

Renovation and Expansion of the Museum

In 2001, the Maritime Museum of Ílhavo underwent a renovation and expansion. It moved into a beautifully designed modern architecture building, the work of the ARX Portugal office. This move marked a significant transformation in the museum's history, providing it with a new and improved space to showcase its exhibits.

Cod Aquarium at the Museum

In 2013, the Maritime Museum of Ílhavo added a significant feature to its exhibits - a large cod aquarium. This addition provides visitors with a unique opportunity to observe these marine creatures up close, further enhancing the museum's maritime theme.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The Maritime Museum of Ilhavo offers visitors a comprehensive look into the maritime heritage of Ílhavo and Portugal's fishing industry. The museum houses an extensive collection of model ships, nautical instruments, and fishing equipment, providing insight into the region's strong connection to the sea. Many visitors appreciate the well-organized exhibits that showcase the local cod fishing tradition, including a full-size replica of a fishing boat. The museum also features a large aquarium with live cod, which is often highlighted as an interesting attraction. While some find the museum informative and engaging, others mention that some areas could benefit from more detailed English translations. The museum's architecture is modern and spacious, allowing for a comfortable viewing experience. However, a few visitors note that the content might be too specialized for those without a specific interest in maritime history. Overall, the Maritime Museum of Ilhavo offers a solid educational experience for those interested in Portugal's seafaring past, though it may not appeal equally to all visitors.
