Discover the Gulf of Maine at the Maine State Aquarium. The Gulf covers 36,000 square miles of ocean with 7,500 miles of coastline. Here water from 60 rivers meets the Atlantic Ocean. Shallow waters mix with nutrient-rich deep ocean waters. This creates a dynamic ecosystem home to over 3,000 species. The Gulf is also a source of food, tourism, and livelihood for millions of Mainers. The Aquarium is a Department of Marine Resources facility. DMR protects, conserves, studies, and manages the Gulf of Maine's resources. Our facility is open room with an adjacent Learning Lab. Parking is available but very limited. Afternoons are less busy that mornings. Tickets must be purchased online either in advance or at the door by visiting our website www.maine.gov/dmr/programs/education-division/aquarium When you visit, you will meet plants and animals that live in the Gulf of Maine. Our interactive exhibits will introduce you to the DMR scientists who study the Gulf, and the communities and industries who depend on it.

Maine State Aquarium has 1 rating.
The Maine State Aquarium in Boothbay Harbor offers visitors a chance to explore marine life native to the Gulf of Maine. The aquarium features touch tanks where guests can interact with various sea creatures, including starfish and small sharks. Many visitors appreciate the hands-on experiences and the opportunity to learn about local marine ecosystems. The staff is generally described as knowledgeable and friendly, enhancing the educational aspect of the visit. However, some visitors note that the aquarium is relatively small, which may lead to a brief visit experience. The exhibits are focused primarily on local species, which some find interesting, while others might prefer a wider variety. The location by the water adds to the atmosphere, but parking can be challenging during peak times. Overall, the Maine State Aquarium provides a good introduction to Maine's marine life, particularly suitable for families with children, though adults interested in marine biology may also find it worthwhile.
