The Ludwig Museum is housed in the former "Kommende der Deutschherren" (the so-called Deutschherrenhaus), a building that dates back to the 13th century. The city of Koblenz was able to acquire this historic building with the support of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate.
The Ludwig Museum in Koblenz is unique in Germany for its focus on French art, particularly from the period following World War II. The museum's collection spans four floors and includes works by renowned artists such as Pablo Picasso, Wols, Jean Dubuffet, Bernar Venet, Daniel Buren, Claude Viallat, Arman, César, Jean Tinguely, Daniel Spoerri, Robert Combas, and many others.
In addition to the indoor exhibits, the Ludwig Museum also features sculpture art in the adjacent Blumenhof. Here, visitors can see works by artists such as César, Anne and Patrick Poirier, Takashi Naraha, and Robert Schad.

The Ludwig Museum Koblenz offers a diverse collection of contemporary art in a historic setting. Located in the Deutschherrenhaus, the museum features works by notable artists from the 20th and 21st centuries. Visitors appreciate the well-curated exhibitions and the blend of modern art with the building's historical architecture. The museum's focus on international contemporary art provides an engaging experience for art enthusiasts.
However, some visitors note that the collection is relatively small compared to larger art museums. The limited size means that a thorough visit can be completed in a few hours. Additionally, some reviews mention that the information provided about the artworks could be more extensive, especially for those less familiar with contemporary art.
The museum's location near the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers adds to its appeal, offering picturesque views. The staff is generally described as friendly and helpful. While the museum may not cater to all tastes, it is considered a worthwhile visit for those interested in modern and contemporary art.
