Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park is a vast 1500 acre botanical garden, zoo, and greenhouse situated in Carlsbad, New Mexico. It is managed by the New Mexico State Parks Division and has been a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 2002. The park is located near the U.S. Route 285 on the northern border of Carlsbad, at an elevation of 3,200 feet, overlooking the Ocotillo Hills with views of the city and the Pecos River.
The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park is open to the public every day of the week during office hours, with the exception of Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's Day. There is an entrance fee for visitors. The park was established in 1967 and has been a member of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) since 2002.
The zoo at Living Desert Zoo and Gardens State Park is home to over forty species of native animals. These include pronghorn, badger, bison, American lynx, mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, foxes, cougar, prairie dog, Gila monster, fourteen species of snakes, and Mexican gray wolves. This diverse range of species provides visitors with a unique opportunity to observe and learn about these animals in their natural habitats.
