Lincoln Herndon Law Office and its collection

Lincoln Herndon Law Office
Source

The Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices State Historic Site is a significant landmark in Springfield, Illinois. Constructed in 1841, this historic brick building stands as a testament to the rich history of the area. It was here that Abraham Lincoln and his partner Stephen T. Logan moved their law offices in 1843. The building has been meticulously restored and is now operated by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency as a state historic site.

The Firm of Lincoln and Herndon

The Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices served as the professional base for the firm of Lincoln and Herndon from 1844 until about 1852. During this period, Abraham Lincoln accepted a younger lawyer, William H. Herndon, as his junior partner. This period of operation adds to the historical significance of the building, as it was a crucial phase in the professional life of Abraham Lincoln.

Restoration of the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices

In 1985, the Lincoln-Herndon Law Offices became a state-owned historic site managed by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency (IHPA). The IHPA has since restored the surviving portion of the Tinsley Block to resemble its operations in the 1840s. Visitors can now experience the building as it would have appeared during the time when the federal court and the Lincoln and Herndon law office were both operating within the building.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

The Lincoln Herndon Law Office in Springfield, Illinois, offers visitors a glimpse into the early legal career of Abraham Lincoln. Located in a restored building from the 1840s, this small museum preserves the office where Lincoln practiced law with his partner William Herndon from 1843 to 1852. While the exhibit space is limited, it provides an authentic look at the environment where Lincoln worked before becoming president. Visitors appreciate the historical significance of the site and the knowledgeable staff who share interesting facts about Lincoln's time as a lawyer. However, some guests note that the experience is brief and may not occupy more than 30-45 minutes. The museum's strength lies in its authenticity and educational value, rather than in extensive displays or interactive exhibits. It's particularly appealing to history enthusiasts and those interested in Lincoln's pre-presidential career. While not a major attraction, it serves as a worthwhile stop for those exploring Lincoln-related sites in Springfield.
