Lincoln Castle and its collection

Lincoln Castle
Source

By Norman times, Lincoln was the third city of the realm in prosperity and importance. In 1068, two years after the Battle of Hastings, William the Conqueror began building Lincoln Castle on a site occupied since Roman times. For 900 years the castle was used as a court and prison with many being executed on the ramparts. Many original features still remain and the wall walks provide visitors with magnificent views of the Cathedral, the City of Lincoln and the surrounding countryside.

Lincoln Castle Reviews

Lincoln Castle has 1 rating.

  • Apollo's Insights AI-Generated

Lincoln Castle is a well-preserved medieval fortress in the heart of Lincoln, England. Visitors often praise its rich history and impressive architecture. The castle walls offer panoramic views of the city, which many find enjoyable. The Victorian prison within the castle grounds provides an insightful look into 19th-century incarceration, though some find it a bit gloomy. The Magna Carta exhibition is frequently cited as a highlight, housing one of only four surviving original copies of this historic document. However, some visitors mention that the pricing can be steep, especially for families. The castle's events and reenactments receive positive feedback for bringing history to life. While most find the staff knowledgeable and friendly, a few reviews note that more interactive exhibits could enhance the experience. Overall, Lincoln Castle offers a solid blend of history, architecture, and educational value, making it a worthwhile stop for those interested in English heritage.
